Not only does Fall Leaves feature the favorite 9-patch maple leaf block in two sizes, but the wall hanging version has a 9-patch setting.
The 9-patch block can be simple squares,
or incorporate HST's, like in the leaf block,
the shoo fly block,
a snowball,
and the friendship star.
this could go on forever!
And how about quilts, especially the disappearing 9-patch? A very popular quilt pattern created by cutting 9-patch blocks both horizontally and vertically, then rotating the results.
Convinced about how great a 9-patch is?? Want to make some, but not sure what size squares to start with for a given finished block size? No need to do any math - it's all done in this handy chart!
The first column is the size square to cut, the second column is the unfinished block size after nine squares are sewn together, and the last column is the finished block size once it's sewn into a quilt top. Notice the finished block size gets pretty big toward the bottom of the chart, but that number is useful to determine a quilt size with a 9-block setting.

ReplyDeleteHi Susan! The nine-patch block is definitely the most used block in my arsenal. It's my go-to for baby quilts, and as you mentioned it is almost as versatile as the HST in layout options. Love your Fall-ish quilt. It's a beauty. ~smile~ Roseanne

ReplyDeleteFall is in the air, and your 9-patch wonder is perfect for the season. Loved reading your post, but got a little scared when I read that chart. I can't imagine cutting 1" squares to finish into a 1.5" block! LOL!!! I might just have to play with that for fun! :-)

ReplyDeleteHi Susan! For some reason, I thought the 9 patch was just a block that alternated colors. It didn't dawn on me that a block using 9 squares no matter what the colors would be considered a 9-patch! So thank you for educating me. And thanks for the great chart!

ReplyDeleteOh yes, nine-patches are great! I love them in single Irish chain quilts the best, and as much as I love a good star quilt I am also attracted to the more simple and classic designs. And as you pointed out, it's so easy to amp them up with little changes within the block! Thank you for the cutting chart, that will be super useful in the future.
