Welcome to my day on the Orange You Glad blog hop, hosted by Creatin' In the Sticks. My creation for this hop is Qubix, a very striking mini-quilt!
I do love orange - my orange fabric drawer can attest to that! Which makes me super happy with how Qubix came out. It's amazing how eye-catching the contrast is between one color plus black and white. I'm already imagining Qubix as part of my fall decor, lasting from September thru November, though I might get a head start on decorating now!
This hop is all about orange over the next four days,
with these creatives sharing the day with me. For the full list, please visit Carla at Creatin' In the Sticks.

Though I love Qubix in orange, it would look great in any color. And at 24" x 24", this mini-quilt adds a splash of color to any decor. Here's a couple color ideas:
Oh - did I mention the quilting? A simple no mark triangle motif adds the perfect amount of sparkle to Qubix.
Notice the motif is quilted in only two triangles in each square. That's because I wanted some quilting, but not so much that it flattened the quilt. Alternating the motif from top/bottom to side/side was the perfect choice, as it really makes the center dance!
To achieve unity, the same motif was quilted in the black border triangles. The diamond/triangle motif is pretty easy to stitch - check out the video, plus the detailed written tutorial, No Mark Triangle Quilt Motif.
Finally, the white, outside border is full of freehand curls, though I'll admit my backtracking skills are a bit rusty.
I also added a bit of fun to this mini with an orange-dotted black binding, cutting it on the bias so the dots were a bit more random. It's actually my first time working with a bias binding - and boy, was it stretchy.
In case your wondering, that is a real pumpkin in the picture. No, I didn't purchase it just for this photo shoot. It's actually been sitting on our front porch for almost a year a now. The air and temperature must be just right for so as not decay - we're amazed it's lasted this long, and hope it makes it through Thanksgiving.
Hmm, maybe you don't care about the pumpkin but want to make a Qubix mini-quilt of your own. From now till the end of the week, find Qubix on sale in my Etsy shop. It's fast, easy and perfect for a beginner!
Happy Quilting!

You have created a perfect quilt. The pattern, fabrics and your work are all wonderful. I love orange, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever, color-featuring design, Susan! The binding adds such a nice frame, with the random dots. And I really admire your FMQ curls!
ReplyDeleteGreat project!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful and your quilting is amazing, as usual! I love how each color just pops out there. Interesting that the pumpkin is still hanging in there. We'd have pumpkin pie by now with 118 degree temps happening here. LOL
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this quilt! Sew beautiful! Your quilting is just right for it, and I'm glad you showed close ups of what you did. I can't imagine a pumpkin hanging around that long here--it would be mush. How fun that yours has survived so long.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, your Qubix mini-quilt is indeed very striking! It really pops off the white background.
ReplyDeleteJust the right quilt for this hop. It makes me glad. And so many beautiful orange fabrics.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun mini quilt and a with all the different fabrics, it's a great way to bust some of that stash! I can't believe you have kept a pumpkin on your porch for almost a year. If the weather is that great, I may want to live by you! LOL!!
ReplyDeleteThose orange fabrics are so pretty and what a cool quilt. The quilting is perfect.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful I I. It’d be fun to have one in different colors for the different seasons.
ReplyDeleteLove it. The orange really makes a statement with the black and white. So fun that you used black with orange polka dots for your binding.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed that the pumpkin has lasted a year. Mind you, I would have torn into it for the seeds long ago anyway. :)
