Welcome to Midweek Makers!

I'm hopeful for fall colors this year, as I just read that due to the drought in the Northeast, trees are struggling. That means leaf peeping may be a difficult adventure. Sigh.

With no plans to travel for fall colors, I'll content myself with my ocean themed quilt instead. Here's a new palm tree block (on the left) looking happy compared to the older one, which is having a bad hair day. It's also nice that the new one is much easier to applique.

Moving on to last week's party, did you see some of the great quilts on display? My favorite was the dog-themed quilt, Puppy Parade, from Scrapbox Quilts.

Then there were these striking RSC blocks from Quilts, Etc. I've featured these before and love them in the on-point setting.

And there was also this finish, a beautiful blue and yellow strip quilt supporting the Ukraine, made by Grace and Peace Quilting.

Midweek Makers 350

Welcome to Midweek Makers!

Phew! Our heat wave moved on, and now we've got rain, much needed rain. A lot of the plants in my yard are struggling with less water, while at our other, previously ivy infested house, we're worried about soil erosion down a hill. Ugh.

Anyway, since the yard work has slowed to just weekends, I've now resolved to work on a quilt I designed almost two years ago for my son. The goal is to have it done by Christmas so that he can put it on his queen size bed at the other house. 

You may remember a couple blocks, the palm tree and sailboat.

I've now decided I don't like the palm fronds as the color placement is blah, and there are too many pieces. It's been redesigned, though I have yet to stitch it. As for the sailboat, I've redesigned that too, to make construction simpler.

And there in lies the reason for the delay on making this quilt. Complex construction. Sometimes I fall victim to that. My goal going forward is to simplify block construction to still achieve the look I want. 

So, I'm methodically going through these quilt blocks to make them easier to put together. That involves more paper piecing and applique, techniques I really should be embracing over standard piecing. Expect to see more blocks over the next few months - weather permitting!

Midweek Makers 349

Welcome to Midweek Makers!

The heat continues, completely putting a cramp on sewing and quilting. I spend the mornings on the computer, designing blocks, writing posts, visiting blogs, etc, then spend the afternoon reading books cause the computer room has gotten too hot. Ugh global warming!

So with no share from me, let's jump right into showcasing quilts from last week's party! There was very creative flower table topper tutorial from Hello Sewing,

Vicki's Crafts and Quilting has been stitching up a storm of fall runners,

and Quiltpiecer showed off not one, but two RSC flimsies ready for quilting!

Bloglovin Image Update

Follow my blog with Bloglovin  is a test!

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about my struggles to have Bloglovin display my post images. And I have some happy news - after reaching out to the Google/Blogger community, a kind soul suggested a redirect fix in Blogger. 

And it worked! 

For about 2 weeks.

Now it appears as if Bloglovin has some serious problems. I was receiving daily digests up until August 23, then they stopped, then I got them for a couple days, and now they've stopped again. Logging into Bloglovin.com itself brings up a page that says 'Sorry, this page isn't available'. 

For some reason, I can't access my blog feed, nor anyone else's for that matter, though it appears some subscribers can still see my posts. It's just my luck to finally get the issue resolved, only to be thwarted again.             

I guess it's time get over it and move on.

For those of you who follow me through Bloglovin, I suggest it's time to switch to receive my posts via another news source. Though you'll still see the 'Follow me on Bloglovin' badge at the end of my posts, I can't guarantee that you'll actually see those posts.

As for me, QuiltFabrication, the post feed that I use for you to follow is follow.it which not only provides direct post delivery to your inbox, but also has news feeds. Check out the blogs to follow under the DIY feed directory, which includes quilting - woohoo!

Of course, this is completely up to you! I certainly miss the Bloglovin daily digest, but find direct post delivery to be the next best source. How else am I going to keep up with all the quilt blogs???

Midweek Makers 348

Welcome to a scorching hot Midweek Makers!

And hot it is! We've had a several days of record setting temps - Monday our thermometer registered 106 and Tuesday 104 . I'm hoping today heads back into normal range for this time of year as I'm not one for such high heat. It really cuts into sewing, cause who wants to turn on the iron or suffer blackouts due to too much energy consumption? Just gotta lay low right now!

I want to thank all of those who participated in the National Dog Day linky party. I learned a couple things from reading about everyone's pups plus the answers to my fun giveaway questions. The most memorable post was the ice cream dog treats located in stores next to people ice cream - what marketing genius! And the answers to 'what's the most unusual item your dog has chewed' were both scary and pretty funny, though I'm sure funny wasn't the case at the time! 

The lucky winners of the giveaways were Beth S, Donna W and Peggy G. All of you have received your patterns via email - enjoy making the blocks! We'll celebrate National Dog Day again next year so mark your calendars for August 26, 2023!

Stethoscope for September Quilt Block Mania

This month for Quilt Block Mania, the theme is occupations with a free-for-all color palette - woohoo! With both of my sons having girlfriends who are intensive care nurses, plus having worked in the medical profession myself, I chose an instantly recognizable item - a Stethoscope.

As in July with the music theme and a full range of colors, this month's collection of occupational blocks go well together too.

I will admit, I had trouble deciding what color to make the background on the Stethoscope block. It was a tough decision between grey and green.

Though the green adds brightness to the block, I chose the grey as it's a bit more modern, and probably will play nice with all the other designer's blocks. But when it comes down to it, you can make the background whatever color you want!

The Stethoscope block features easy applique, mostly of narrow pieces. Only the heart should have the excess fusible and background fabric removed to reduce the weight. Pretty easy!

A fat quarter is needed for the background, a bit of red for the heart and scraps for the rest plus some fusible web. The pattern also has an optional heartbeat detail, added with stitching before the chest piece is appliqued on. All of the placement guides and full-sized reversed templates are included in the pattern to make a finished 12" Stethoscope block.

How Do I Quilt It - Book of the Month

It's been a while since I've had a book of the month, but I feel this hot-off-the-press is well worth featuring. May I present How Do I Quilt It? by Christa Watson. (affiliate link)

If you've been a follower for awhile, you'll know I'm always on the lookout for quilting books that present quilting designs from the simple to the complex, with freehand or ruler work, for both the domestic machine quilter and the longarmer. And this book is another to add to my library!

How Do I Quilt It? is perfect for the quilter wanting to learn how to quilt on a domestic machine. Christa goes over two methods of domestic machine stitching, using either freemotion or a walking foot. There are three quilt projects given, each using both quilting techniques to get you started.

Christa starts out the quilting process by explaining the tools involved, how to prepare your quilt, and making a quilting plan. Then it's off to stitching. But don't forget, it's important to practice, practice, practice!

Here's a sample of a project, using ribbon candy, 

and here's a collection of other quilting ideas for the same quilt.

If you're ready to jump into quilting your own quilts, I recommend starting out with How Do I Quilt It? It's sure to give you the confidence you need! And once you've become comfortable quilting, expand your repertoire of quilting designs with another of Christa's books, 99 Machine Quilting Designs (affiliate link).
